Clash between police and army personnel in Jammu, 16 including three lieutenant colonels charged with attempt to murder

A case has been registered against 16 army personnel, including three lieutenant colonels, in Kupwara, Jammu and Kashmir, on charges of attempt to murder and robbery. According to reports, the Kupwara police station was attacked by army personnel late on Tuesday (May 28) night, due to which this complaint has been filed. The incident started when the army personnel got angry when the police questioned the Territorial Army personnel.

Five policemen injured

According to the police complaint, 16 jawans, including three officers of the rank of Lieutenant Colonel, have been charged with attempt to murder and robbery. After a raid on the house of a Territorial Army jawan in Batpora village on May 28, army personnel entered the police station at around 9:40 am and attacked him. Five policemen were injured in the attack.

Dispute over investigation into drug case

During the interrogation of 160 Territorial Army jawans in a drug case, the army officers became angry. The anger grew so much that a large number of uniformed and armed soldiers entered the police station. This group also included senior army officers.

Case under Arms Act

A crime has also been registered against the army personnel under the Arms Act. The Kupwara DSP is investigating the case. Officials said, ‘A thorough investigation will be conducted in this matter and the guilty will be punished.’ The army has also issued a statement on the matter. A Srinagar-based army spokesperson said, “This matter is not that big. The reports of policemen being beaten up are false and misleading. There was some disagreement between the policemen and the Territorial Army regarding the operation, which has been resolved.”
