Gujarat Foundation Day: Reflecting on 64 Years of Legacy, Growth, and Unity

Gujarat marked its 64th Foundation Day on Wednesday with vibrant celebrations across the state, reflecting a deep sense of pride in its rich cultural legacy and remarkable journey of progress. From flag hoisting ceremonies to folk performances and tribute events, the day served as a reminder of the state’s pivotal role in India’s growth story.

From the bustling streets of Ahmedabad to the coastal towns of Saurashtra, from tribal belts in the east to the white sands of Kutch — every corner of the state was awash with pride, celebration, and reflection. This day, carved in the memory of a linguistic and cultural movement, brought Gujaratis together to honour their roots and reimagine their future.

It was on May 1, 1960, that Gujarat came into existence as a separate state for Gujarati-speaking people, following the Mahagujarat Movement. But Gujarat’s story begins far earlier — from the ancient trading ports of Lothal in the Indus Valley Civilization, to the birthplaces of Mahatma Gandhi and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Gujarat has long been a land of pioneers, peacemakers, and patriots.

Gujarat gave India not just leaders, but ideas — nonviolence, unity, and self-reliance. It has been the crucible of many movements that shaped modern India.

Today, Gujarat stands tall as a tourism powerhouse, offering an unmatched blend of heritage, spirituality, wildlife, and coastal beauty. Tourists flock to the Gir National Park to witness the majestic Asiatic lions, walk in awe through the white salt desert of the Rann of Kutch, or experience spiritual serenity at Somnath, Dwarka, and Palitana.

The Statue of Unity — the world’s tallest statue dedicated to Sardar Patel — is not only an architectural marvel but a symbol of unity that draws lakhs of visitors annually.

From the heritage-rich streets of Ahmedabad (India’s first UNESCO World Heritage City) to the tribal culture of Dang and the crafts of Kutch, Gujarat is a journey that speaks to every traveler’s soul.

Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the guidance of Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, Gujarat has transformed into one of India’s most developed and investment-friendly states. Known for its robust infrastructure, ease of doing business, and forward-looking policies, the state has attracted global industries, from petrochemicals and pharmaceuticals to renewable energy and startups.

Gujarat is also leading the way in climate action with large-scale solar and wind energy projects, and it continues to set benchmarks in education, women empowerment, urban development, and agriculture.

As Gujarat marches toward its Vision 2047, it continues to blend tradition with technology, heritage with innovation. It aims to be a global model in sustainable development, inclusive growth, and cultural preservation.
