The road-widening project in Motera is scheduled to involve the demolition of more than 500 completed homes and shelters close to the Narendra Modi Stadium. The city hopes to host the 2036 Olympics, therefore, this initiative tries to upgrade the infrastructure.
The eviction notice has now been challenged by the impacted residents of Motera in a Gujarat High Court case. The Motera stadium’s main road will be widened as a result of the demolition. By Town Planning Scheme No. 23, which was completed in 1984, the eviction notices request that residents of Baldevnagar and the surrounding areas of Narendra Modi Stadium in Acher village, Sabarmati, leave their properties amicably.
The eviction notices issued by the Assistant Estate Officer under Section 68 of the Gujarat Town Planning and Urban Development Act, 1976, were challenged in two different petitions brought by Pushpaben Vania and 28 others, and Umesh Makwana and 48 others.
According to government lawyers, the eviction procedure was carried out following the law. They pointed out that a portion of the final plot allocation is set aside for residents of the Economically Weaker Section (EWS), who will receive alternate accommodation.
The government claims that because the Town Planning scheme’s draft was published in 1965 and completed in 1984, it is appropriate for use in public projects. Since the residents knew about the TP program but didn’t complain until 2025, the authorities contended that their objections should be disregarded.
The petitioners retorted that they had constructed their homes per the law and had been residents of the region for 60 years. According to the petitioners’ attorney, the TP plan was decided upon 41 years ago without the people’s input. After hearing all arguments, the High Court has reserved its decision.
